Why you feel puffy and heavy, and six daily habits to support your lymphatic flow

Puffy face in the morning. Rings that feel tight. Legs that feel heavy by the afternoon, or a middle that feels bloated no matter what you eat. If any of this sounds familiar, your lymphatic system may simply be asking for a little more support.

Why you might feel puffy and heavy

Your lymphatic system carries excess fluid away from your tissues and back into circulation. Unlike your blood, lymph has no heart to pump it. It moves with your breath, your muscles and your movement through the day.

When that movement slows, fluid can linger. Common reasons include:

  • Long hours sitting at a desk, in the car or on a plane
  • Stress and shallow breathing
  • Hormonal shifts across your cycle, pregnancy or perimenopause
  • Not drinking enough, or drinking water without the minerals your body needs
  • Poor sleep, or a busy season where your body never really gets to rest

Six simple habits to support your flow

1. Move a little, often

Your muscles are your lymphatic pump. A short walk, some calf raises at your desk or a few minutes of stretching every hour can make a noticeable difference, especially on long workdays and travel days.

2. Breathe deeply

Slow belly breathing gently massages the larger lymphatic vessels in your torso. Try breathing in through your nose for four counts, letting your belly expand, then breathing out slowly for six. A few minutes morning and night is a beautiful place to start.

3. Hydrate with minerals

Lymph is mostly water, so hydration matters. Water is absorbed best with minerals, so add a pinch of quality salt or a trace mineral blend to your glass, and sip steadily through the day.

4. Activate, then dry brush

Before dry brushing, gently activate your lymph nodes so fluid has somewhere to go. Use light, circular touches above your collarbones, in your armpits and at the creases of your hips. Then, with a soft brush and very light pressure, brush in long strokes towards your heart, starting at your feet and working upwards. A few minutes before your morning shower is enough.

5. Put your legs up

Lying with your legs up the wall for five to ten minutes at the end of the day lets gravity help fluid move from your legs back towards your heart. It’s also a lovely way to slow down before sleep.

6. Rest properly

Your body does much of its restoring while you sleep. A consistent bedtime, a calmer evening routine and fewer late-night screens all help your nervous system, and your lymph, settle.

When to book a lymphatic session

Daily habits make a real difference, and professional lymphatic drainage takes that support a step further. A FLOWTOX™ session uses slow, rhythmic techniques to encourage fluid to move, and many clients leave feeling lighter, less puffy and deeply relaxed. It’s a particularly lovely reset after travel, during a hormonal flare or in a stressful season.

Book a FLOWTOX™ session at our studio in Turner, Canberra, or get in touch with any questions.

A note on swelling: if swelling appears suddenly, is in one limb only, or comes with pain, redness, warmth or shortness of breath, please see your GP or seek medical care straight away.
